Khaled's Story
Khaled is a 27-year-old Palestinian student from Khan Younis and has been accepted for a master's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Laval. He has his study papers from the government of Quebec in hand but he and his family have been trapped in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war.
Khaled's family consists of his 2 parents and 4 younger siblings, including minors under the age of 18. Their house was destroyed by an airstrike early in the war and they've been running from place to place periodically trying to outrun the bombs. They've all lost several friends and family members as well in addition to everything they've ever owned expect for the clothes on their backs and what they could carry with them each time they had to make an escape. |
Khaled has a lot to contribute to Canadian society as he is very intelligent and possesses many in-demand skills. Furthermore, he is multilingual, being fluent in Arabic, English and French, as well as being conversational in German. He has several friends in Canada who are waiting to welcome him with open arms and help him start all over, and he and I really want our chance at our happily ever after. The only obstacle in getting him and his family safely over here in my arms is the sheer amount of money needed to get seven people out of Gaza and first into Egypt.
The Egyptians charge $5000 (USD) per adult to exit through the Rafah crossing. This is an impossible amount for any average civlian in Gaza, and even more so considering that this family has lost everything in the war.
The current plan is to get Khaled out first so he can then have access to more ressources and opportunities to help his family until there is enough money to get them out too. They depend on him but right now he depends on us. The money is the final barrier to give them a second chance after so many months of facing genocide, warfare and famine. |
