Ink on a Page

Written in various styles, multiple points of view and across a plethora of genres, these ten short (and some not-so-short) stories will have you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as you turn each page. Some are intense, some are funny, some are profound, others are outright strange, but they’re all memorable in their own right.

Forlorn Memories follows Canadian nurse Annemarie as she falls in love with German soldier Hans during the Second World War and the catastrophic consequences of their liaison, while Purrfect Kitty follows a lonely man named Tim’s online quest for love and the nasty surprises that awaited him on the other side of the screen.

Renegades tells the story of a young woman who wakes up in an unknown man’s body one morning and must figure out a whole new life without letting anything show, meanwhile, Wait lets the reader in on intimate conversations between the elderly at a hospice when a new and much younger, resident moves in.

Penned by author Jamila Mikhail, the collection offers ten fantastic stories that vary in their setup, genre, and stylistic approach but all center on themes of connection, emotion, and figuring ourselves out as people. From speculative body-swap dramas to cross-cultural romance and brushes with disaster, the collection has something for everyone across different periods of history and places in the world.

Author Jamila Mikhail could not have offered readers a better showcase of her abilities than to create a collection like this. One of the things that struck me most about this anthology was the variety of styles that Mikhail adapts to her purpose, seamlessly transitioning to different narratives to bend a style to suit the atmosphere and emotional intention of her story. Overall, Ink on a Page is a highly recommended read for fans of accomplished short-form fiction, and I can’t wait to see what else this promising author has in store.
